Woman With Bright White TeethYou could get the brighter smile you want in as little as one in-office whitening treatment.

There are so many different ways to whiten your smile that you may feel a bit confused as to which option to choose. While you could opt for over-the-counter whitening methods, these often take a long time to produce results, often fall short of expectations, and don't last long. Instead, you could turn to our cosmetic dentists in Westland, MI, Dr. Dennis Aylward, Dr. Brent Carey, and Dr. Allison Carey, for a vastly better experience! Read on to learn more about our professional whitening options and how they differ from commercial products and do-it-yourself approaches.

Why are my teeth stained?

There are two types of dental stains: extrinsic (external) and intrinsic (internal):

  • Extrinsic stains are more common kind, and they are caused by the foods/drinks we consume such as coffee, tea, red wine, and tomato sauce.
  • Intrinsic stains, on the other hand, occur under the enamel layer within the dentin. Trauma to the tooth and certain medications (e.g. antibiotics) can lead to these stains.

How does professional teeth whitening work?

Professional teeth whitening is the fastest and most effective way to target both extrinsic and minor intrinsic stains. The bleaching gel that we use contains a very high concentration of peroxide, and it is painted over the front of the teeth to break up stubborn stain molecules within the enamel and dentin layers. The bleaching gel also has the ability to brighten the overall color of your smile.

In as little as one session you may be able to get the brighter results you want. The major benefit of professional whitening is that your results are immediate and significantly visible, which makes it a great option for patients on a time crunch!

Dental VeneersDoes your smile express who you really are, or do defects in tooth color, shape and alignment mar what you say to the world around you? Make a definitive smile statement when you improve your teeth with porcelain veneers from Carey-Aylward Dentistry in Westland, MI. Made from fine, dental-grade ceramic, custom-fabricated veneers disguise a myriad of dental flaws and strengthen your teeth, too. Your smile can improve dramatically!

What are porcelain veneers?

They are specially made ceramic laminates which resurface teeth flawed by spaces, pits, hairline cracks, dark discoloration, congenital defects and more. Cemented on the front side of teeth in the smile zone at the front of the mouth, veneers remake smile aesthetics, and they add a measure of durability, too.

To qualify for veneers, your gums and teeth should be healthy, and your smile goals--realistic. For instance, veneers can correct small gaps and overlapping. However, they cannot re-align smiles which need orthodontic correction. Also, in some cases, a full porcelain crown may be a better choice than a veneer.

Placing veneers

What does placing veneers entail? Once you and Dr. Aylward or Dr. Carey agree on a treatment plan, you'll undergo some mild enamel resurfacing. You may or may not need local anesthetic for this quick process which removes about 1/2 millimeter of enamel from the front side of each tooth. This reduction makes veneers a permanent enhancement but does not affect the strength and health of your teeth.

Additionally, the dentist takes oral impressions which accompany specific instructions for the dental lab. A highly trained ceramist constructs each veneer from color-matched, translucent ceramic. When your dentist bonds the veneers on your teeth, he adjusts the color of the adhesive and ensures the fit and bite of each laminate is perfect.

Life with your new smile

You'll quickly adjust to how your veneers feel inside your mouth. You'll also enjoy how easily you care for your beautified smile. Just brush twice a day with a mild toothpaste and soft brush. Floss once a day to keep your gums and interdental spaces clean, and see Dr. Carey or Dr. Aylward for semi-annual cleanings and examinations or any time you have a concern. But, don't worry. Well cared for veneers last upwards of ten years, says the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.

The importance of replacing missing teeth is often overlooked by many people. However, leaving a gap untreated can result in various side effects that can cause serious issues. The most lifelike and naturally-functioning tooth replacement option is a dental implant. Often considered the gold standard of replacing teeth, implants have many benefits and take only a few dental appointments to complete. Read on to learn more about the dental implants provided by Dr. Dennis Aylward, Dr. Brent Carey, and Dr. Allison Carey at Carey-Aylward Dentistry in Westland, MI!

How do dental implants work?

Dental implants are implemented through a surgical procedure that places the implant fixture into the jawbone beneath the missing tooth. As the bone heals, it grows around the fixture to hold it securely in place and provide a sturdy foundation for the prosthetic tooth. The prosthetic fits over the fixture and connects to it via the implant abutment to complete the implant process.

Do I need dental implants?

Dental implants can benefit patients in a variety of situations, including those needing to replace one, several, or even all of their teeth.

  • Single tooth implants: Single tooth implants stand on their own to replace one missing tooth. The implant's prosthetic fits over the implant to complete the restoration.
  • Multiple tooth implants: Multiple tooth implants replace several teeth at once and are held in place by an implant on either side.
  • Implant-supported dentures: Implant-supported dentures permanently replace all the teeth on an arch with a non-removable restoration. Four or more implants throughout the arch hold the denture in place.

Dental Implants in Westland, MI

If you have one or more missing teeth, you may benefit from dental implants. In addition to filling in your gaps, implants provide the jawbone with adequate stimulation to remain healthy and avoid bone atrophy. Implants also keep natural teeth from drifting or moving to compensate for the extra room left behind by a missing tooth. Treating these issues can help avoid serious dental complications and keep your smile healthy for years to come.

Crowns and bridgesCrowns and bridges just may provide the ideal solution to your cosmetic dental issue. Westland, MI, dentists Drs. Brent Carey, Dennis Aylward, and Allison Carey offer the restorations at Carey & Aylward.

What are crowns and bridges?

Crowns are hollow tooth-shaped restorations that slip over teeth. Before you receive a crown, your Westland, MI, dentist must decrease the circumference of your tooth slightly to ensure that the restoration fits comfortably. Crowns are cemented to your teeth and are available in a variety of materials tough enough to withstand daily wear and tear, such as ceramic, resin, porcelain, and porcelain-fused-to-metal.

Bridges fill gaps in your smile that occur due to missing teeth. They consist of one or more artificial teeth connected to crowns on either end.

Are crowns or bridges a good choice for me?

Crowns are particularly versatile and are an excellent option in any of these circumstances:

  • Your tooth is damaged: Fractures, breaks and large chips in teeth detract from your appearance and may also make it difficult to chew and tear foods. Crowns cover the damaged area, completely restoring your tooth. Crowns are created from a mold of your mouth to ensure that your restoration looks completely natural.
  • You have a crack in your tooth: A crack may not sound like a major problem, but that tiny crack can turn into a break or fracture one day. Crowns prevent cracks from worsening, protecting your teeth.
  • Your dentist tells you that you have a fragile teeth: Teeth can become brittle or fragile as you age or may weaken due to large fillings, root canals or other dental procedures. Crowns protect and strengthen at-risk teeth.
  • Your tooth is discolored or oddly shaped: Crowns hide discolorations and may also be used to completely transform teeth. The restorations change the height and width of teeth and are a good choice if a tooth is too short, crooked, twisted, or pointed.

A bridge may be recommended if you've lost a tooth or two. If you don't replace your lost teeth, your other teeth may begin to drift, which will affect the appearance of your smile and may lead to bite problems.
