Stains on your teeth can drag your smile down and make you feel as though your appearance is lackluster. Luckily, you can quickly and teeth whiteningeasily reverse this dental issue and say goodbye to your dental stains with teeth whitening. Learn how this procedure can help you say goodbye to your dental stains and yellowed teeth with Dr. Dennis Aylward, Dr. Brent Carey, and Dr. Allison Carey at Carey & Aylward DDS in Westland, MI.

Can teeth whitening help me?
Teeth whitening is an effective procedure which can usually help anyone who wishes they had a brighter, whiter smile. However, not everyone is a good candidate for teeth whitening. Patients with visible porcelain dental restorations like crowns, bridges, or veneers should consider that teeth whitening does not lift the color of porcelain. This means that your teeth could have an uneven appearance unless you plan with your dentist before your whitening treatment. Additionally, patients with significant tooth sensitivity should alert their dentist before their procedure. Patients should also have any instances of teeth decay or gum disease treated prior to their whitening session.

Professional Teeth Whitening vs. At-Home Kits
While there are various at-home whitening kits that can lift the color of your teeth, they simply cannot hold up to professional teeth whitening results. In-office whitening treatments are monitored by your dentist, allowing the materials used to be stronger than what is allowed in at-home kits. At-home kits require weeks or even months of regular use to provide noticeable results while professional whitening procedures can lift the color of the teeth up to ten shades in a single session. These factors mean that in-office whitening provides better results in far less time than at-home kits.

In-Office Teeth Whitening Treatments in Westland, MI
If you are considering teeth whitening for your yellowed or stained smile, you should consult with your dentist to ensure that this is the best treatment plan for you. BaseballsFranciscoLindorShinesasMrSmile

At the first-ever Players Weekend in August 2017, Major League Baseball players wore jerseys with their nicknames on the back. One player — Cleveland Indians shortstop, Francisco Lindor — picked the perfect moniker to express his cheerful, fun-loving nature: “Mr. Smile.” And Lindor gave fans plenty to smile about when he belted a 2-run homer into the stands while wearing his new jersey!

Lindor has explained that he believes smiling is an important part of connecting with fans and teammates alike: “I’ve never been a fan of the guy that makes a great play and then acts like he’s done it 10,000 times — smile, man! We’ve got to enjoy the game.”

We think Lindor is right: Smiling is a great way to generate good will. And it feels great too… as long as you have a smile that’s healthy, and that looks as good as you want it to. But what if you don’t? Here are some things we can do at the dental office to help you enjoy smiling again:

Routine Professional Cleanings & Exams. This is a great place to start on the road toward a healthy, beautiful smile. Even if you are conscientious about brushing and flossing at home, you won’t be able to remove all of the disease-causing dental plaque that can hide beneath the gum line, especially if it has hardened into tartar, but we can do it easily in the office. Then, after a thorough dental exam, we can identify any problems that may be affecting your ability to smile freely, such as tooth decay, gum disease, or cosmetic dental issues.

Cosmetic Dental Treatments. If your oral health is good but your smile is not as bright as you’d like it to be, we can discuss a number of cosmetic dental treatments that can help. These range from conservative procedures such as professional teeth whitening and bonding to more dramatic procedures like porcelain veneers or crowns.

Tooth Replacement. Many people hide their smiles because they are embarrassed by a gap from a missing tooth. That’s a shame, because there are several excellent tooth-replacement options in a variety of price ranges. These include partial and full dentures, bridgework, and dental implants. So don’t let a missing tooth stop you from being Mr. (or Ms.) Smile!

Dennis Aylward, Brent Carey, and Allison Carey recommend this cosmetic treatment for people free of decay and gum disease. They may work well for you!

The details on porcelain veneers in Westland

Porcelain veneers in Westland are crafted from high-quality ceramic. They are super-thin shells that your dentist bonds in place with a special adhesive and hardening light.

To ensure veneers fit comfortably inside your mouth, Dr. Aylward or Dr. Carey first removes a thin portion of enamel from the front of the tooth. This resurfacing allows a good bond and makes the refurbishment permanent. The dentist then places temporary veneers and sends oral impressions and a care plan to the dental lab.

At the lab, a ceramist crafts the veneers one by one. He or she ensures that the shape and color of the veneers blend in with the rest of your smile. The idea is to make you look like you only better!

During the next dental visit, the doctor removes the temporaries and glues the new veneers in place. He uses the bonding cement to adjust the veneer color, and he adjusts the fit and bite, too.

After a few days, patients grow accustomed to how their porcelain veneers feel. The team at Carey & Aylward DDS encourage patients to brush twice a day with a soft brush and to floss carefully around their veneers. Also, the dentists like all their patients to come to the office twice a year for cleanings and check-ups so those refurbished smiles stay bright and healthy. With routine care and gentle eating habits (don't chew ice cubes or peanut brittle), porcelain veneers last 10 to 15 years or even longer says the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.

JasonDerulosIdealMatch

When the multi-platinum recording artist, songwriter and TV personality Jason Derulo was recently asked about his ideal woman, his answer covered a remarkably broad spectrum. "There’s no specific thing," he said, "so I think it’s unfair to say what my ‘type’ is." But it turns out that there is one thing the So You Think You Can Dance judge considers essential: A beautiful smile.

"I’m not into messy teeth," Derulo said. "If the grill has spaces and different colors, it’s not my vibe."

As it turns out, he may be on to something: A number of surveys have indicated that a bright, healthy smile is often the first thing people notice when meeting someone new. Yet many are reluctant to open up that big grin because they aren’t satisfied with the way their teeth look. If you’re one of them, consider this: Modern cosmetic dentistry offers a variety of ways to improve your smile — and it may be easier and more affordable than you think.

For example, if your smile isn’t as bright as you would like it to be, teeth whitening is an effective and economical way to lighten it up. If you opt for in-office treatments, you can expect a lightening effect of up to 10 shades in a single one-hour treatment! Or, you can achieve the same effect in a week or two with a take-home kit we can custom-make for you. Either way, you’ll be safe and comfortable being treated under the supervision of a dental professional — and the results can be expected to last for up to two years, or perhaps more.

If your teeth have minor spacing irregularities, small chips or cracks, it may be possible to repair them in a single office visit via cosmetic bonding. In this process, a liquid composite resin is applied to the teeth and cured (hardened) with a special light. This high-tech material, which comes in colors to match your teeth, can be built up in layers and shaped with dental instruments to create a pleasing, natural effect.

If your smile needs more than just a touch-up, dental veneers may be the answer. These wafer-thin coverings, placed right on top of your natural teeth, can be made in a variety of shapes and colors — from a natural pearly luster to a brilliant "Hollywood white." Custom-made veneers typically involve the removal of a few millimeters of tooth enamel, making them a permanent — and irreversible — treatment. However, by making teeth look more even, closing up spaces and providing dazzling whiteness, veneers just might give you the smile you’ve always wanted.

If you feel like your smile could use a makeover, you could benefit from asking your dentist about cosmetic dentistry procedures. These veneersspecific procedures focus on making your smile look great to help you feel great as well. Learn more about cosmetic procedures like veneers and teeth whitening with Cary & Aylward Dentistry in Westland, MI.

What are veneers?
Veneers give your smile a total overhaul with only a few simple dental appointments. The veneer itself is made from porcelain in a dental laboratory. The veneer bonds to the front of the tooth to cover its imperfections or abnormalities. Veneers best treat cracks, chips, discolorations and even small gaps or overlaps. Veneers also change the length, width and shape of the tooth.

What is teeth whitening?
Teeth whitening is a fast and easy way to effectively give your smile a boost. The whitening procedure takes about an hour and can lift the color of your teeth dramatically in a single session. While teeth whitening provides quick results, they are not permanent. Most patients go back for touch up appointments once or twice yearly.

What can these cosmetic dentistry procedures do for me?
Teeth whitening does not work on dental restorations like veneers. However, it can work together with veneers to improve the appearance of your smile. Together, you and your dentist can decide on a color whiter than your natural teeth for your veneers, then use teeth whitening to lighten the natural teeth up to the same shade of white. Your dentist can help you determine which colors and if these procedures are right for you.
